Organizing your life is one thing, but keeping it that way is a whole other story. 

We interviewed a professional organizer herself - Lisa Jacobs from Imagine It Done - to ask the real questions we're all wondering about. Check out the awesome interview below, including info on what it means to be a professional organizer,  tips and tricks she uses in her own life and so much more. 

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Where are you from originally? Where do you live now?

I am originally from a small town called Brookville, on Long Island NY. From Brookville, I went to University of Maryland, transferred to Boston University and studied abroad in Paris. I started my career working in Manhattan, raised 3 children in Long Island and I am currently living in Manhattan.

When did you start your company? How long have you been a professional organizer?

I started my company in 2004. I have been a professional organizer since 2004, 14 years!

How did you come up with your business name, Imagine It Done?

I sourced words that related to my passion of organization. The word "Imagine" is reflective of my life. I am a very inquisitive and inventive lady!

For those who don’t know, what is a professional organizer? Why do people hire you?

A professional organizer is someone that helps to create order from disorder in any space. We help you maintain a healthy lifestyle through creating functional, decorative and simplistic spaces in your home. People hire me because I am the expert! People realize that it is challenging to take on this life-changing process alone, so they call in re-enforcement (me!)

What is the most popular kind of request you get from customers? What different services does your company offer?

People often start off by saying, "I have too much stuff and I don't know where to put it. I have no space and don't know what to do!" We offer sourcing of organizational accessories to maximize and create better function in the spaces. Decluttering, donating, educating and designing each space specifically for the client are other things we offer!

What is your favorite part of your job?
Working with a team and helping people in need. I truly believe that this process has the power to be life changing.

What should someone look for when they are trying to hire a professional organizer?

They should look for pictures and references to past work that is an indication of their organizers style. Look for a company or person that is compatible with what your needs are.

How much does it typically cost to hire a professional organizer?

It varies from company to company. You get what you pay for!
What are some common mistakes people make when trying to organize their life?

People face road blocks doing it themselves because they don't have the answers. Bringing in an expert to show them how, what, where and why is imperative.

Can you share some tips for someone who wants to organize their life & doesn’t know where to start?

Yes, reach out to a professional! You can also follow an organizer on Instagram that is actually demonstrating and posting tips that you can recreate on your own. Monkey see, monkey do!

We know you are a big fan of EzPacking. Do you have any tips on how you use EzPacking to better organize your life?

There are so many ways you can use EzPacking. I always use these when travelling, categorizing your items into the cubes before putting them in a suitcase. It maximizes space in your suitcase, and enables you to see everything you have. My favorite part is when I travel, I take the cubes and put them directly in the hotel drawers with my clothing in them! You can use them at home in drawers or on shelves for everything from toiletries to medicine. You can even use them to store children's toys!

For those people who already feel organized...what are some daily or weekly habits that keep your life in check?

Sort through your mail, and your email daily, never let it pile up! Clean up your home as you go, don't leave for tomorrow what can be done today. I also clean out my handbag every single day. Most importantly, create a to-do checklist for the next day before you go to bed.

What are some of your favorite products that help you stay organized?

EzPacking cubes, sparco clear plastic file folders, the perfect gel pen, a pencil with a good eraser and a handbag with an insert to keep things organized.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

Spend time with my children, over anything else. The old Lisa loved to swim and travel but when you are running a business who has the time?!

We noticed you are very active on Instagram! What are the types of posts people can expect to find on your account?

We are obviously an organization company, so we post a ton of demos and tips on how we do what we do. We are also a lifestyle company, so we're moving towards showcasing more products and accessories that help make a house a home. Expect to see more exciting things to come!
